“It’s too bad we can’t jump out of a plane today,” Mason told Gavin after they finished cleaning up and getting dressed for the second time that day.
“Or go hiking.”
Those two activities had become their thing. From the first time they spent together, when they went skydiving and then hiking, it had become a tradition for them. They went a of couple times a year—sometimes just to feel the freedom it gave, other times to clear their minds, or for the adrenaline rush. He’d skydived before meeting Gavin but it became a completely different sensation after going with him for the first time. He didn’t think it was something he could ever do alone again.
“Or,” Gavin added, “We can curl up in bed and not leave until we have to.”
That sounded pretty fucking incredible to Mason, but he knew it wouldn’t work. Gavin would be on edge all day. “You need a new tuning rod, right? How about we make a trip to the music store and pick up a few supplies, grab some lunch, and then get ready for tonight.”
Gavin nodded. “Okay, sounds good to me.”
So that’s what they did. They drove to the music store. What should have taken five minutes took an hour, because that’s what happened when you mixed music and Gavin. Mason didn’t mind, though. He watched Gavin the way he always did, saw the passion shine from him as he walked through the store admiring the instruments. Once they were done, they visited a small café for lunch.
They both got soup in bread bowls, and coffee. They talked about nothing and everything at the same time, which was how it always went with them. Gavin asked about Isaac, and Alexander’s. The family business was thriving with his ex running it, and actually, Isaac and Gavin had somewhat become friends. Not the best, mind you, but they were okay with each other in ways they hadn’t been before. Gavin didn’t know it, but Mason actually arranged for Isaac to be at Creekside tonight.
When they finished eating they got back into the car to head home.
“I tried to call my mom when you were getting ready this morning. She didn’t answer. I know it sounds crazy; it’s just a missed phone call, but it worries me. I don’t like her being so far away.”
Mason’s heart rate sped up, his hands becoming sweaty on the wheel. This was a worry that had grown consistently stronger for Gavin the past few months. “It doesn’t sound crazy. She’s your mom, it’s understandable. She’s okay, though. Try not to worry.” It was different for Gavin than it was for Mason. She was all he had left. She was older, and he one hundred percent agreed with the man, she needed to be closer to them. He’d do anything to make that happen for Gavin because he knew it would relieve some of his stress.
When Gavin didn’t answer, Mason pulled off the road and into the parking lot of a small, local park.
